One of the challenges we often hear from teachers is what texts they might consider for inclusion in their classrooms. With so much rich literature in the world, old and new, the decision can be overwhelming. While there are many factors that go into curricular decision-making, a literary diet that reflects the rich diversity of the human experience is critical to develop empathy and understanding. Thus, to better support teachers and students, the #DisruptTexts team periodically recommends texts for teachers to read, enjoy, and consider using with students. Texts feature the work of #ownvoices authors and offer in-depth opportunities for literary analysis and discussion in the classroom.
(And while you are here, be sure to check out the Reading Diversity Toolkit from Teaching Tolerance, which “promotes a multi-dimensional approach to text selection that prioritizes critical literacy, cultural responsiveness and complexity.” See Teacher’s Edition and Extended Edition. )
